ELPIS ONLUS

The Xenia 34° North Project rise from the collaboration between ELPIS NAVE OSPEDALE ONLUS, ngo based in Trapani (Italy) and Waha International, Rainbow for Africa, MissionLand, Engim Internazionale with the common goal to build up a hospital ship to provide primary health care and life-saving rescue close to the operational area in Central Mediterranean Sea on the 34° parallel in the south of Lampedusa. The hospital ship “Elpis” is a completely renovated old Russian fishing boat, built in 1991. The main goal of the mission is to offer high-quality emergency care to the migrants: on board there is a laboratory, an ICU shelter, a blood bank and an Operative theatre. The crew was formed with professional sailormen and the minimum medical team formed by 2 doctors + 2 nurses with specific emergency skills. In July 2016 Elpis Hospital ship started the mission, based in Lampedusa, to cooperate with Italian marittime authorities and other NGOs, but the project did not become active.
