JUGEND RETTET e.V. is a non-governmental organization of young Europeans. Jugend Rettet was founded in October 2015 and is based in Berlin, Germany. The ship selected to become Jugend Rettet’s active contribution to maritime search and rescue in the Central Mediterranean Sea was acquired with crowdfunding in 2016, converted and refitted by the effort of many volunteers and was called Iuventa. With this ship, Jugend Rettet started patrolling on the central Mediterranean route since July 2016 near Libyan territorial waters, to search for boats in maritime distress and put the people in safety.
